Fort Sherman

Anthurium papillilaminum Fort Sherman

The so-called Anthurium papillilaminum 'Fort Sherman' is a special clone of Anthurium papillilaminum. It was collected by Jay Vannini near the US Army base "Fort Sherman" in the 1980s. The fort is located at the northern end of the Panama Canal in the province of Colón and was used to defend the Caribbean side of the canal by the Americans. It was handed back to the government of Panama in 1999.

In contemporary horticulture, the name of this military facility represents one of the two prominent clones of the canal ecotype. These are characterized by a very elongated leaf shape, a dark green, very velvety leaf surface and golden to reddish veins. The sine is open. The other notable form is 'Ralph Lynam', named after the American breeder Ralph Lynam. Compared to the 'Ralph Lynam', the 'Fort Sherman' is slightly more elongated, with more of a golden-greenish than reddish vein color and the sinus is open, but not excessively wide.

Other suspected canal papillilaminums include the Ree Gardens clone and Anthurium papillilaminum 'Daniel' . Some US growers claim that the Ree Garden clone is even the same plant as Jay Vannini's 'Fort Sherman'. However, more details are unknown.

Well-known crosses with the Anthurium papillilaminum 'Fort Sherman' include Jay Vannini's Anthurium papillilaminum 'Ralph Lynam x Fort Sherman' ('RL x FS') or Anthurium 'Curandero'.

Furthermore, it should be emphasized that Indonesian sellers also often use the name 'Fort Sherman' for a phenotypically very similar Anthurium papillilaminum . It is not clear whether there is a direct relationship to Jay Vannini's 'Fort Sherman'. There is also speculation that the Indonesian 'Fort Sherman' could be a closer relative of the Ree Garden clone, which was proven to have found its way to Asia many years ago. The pure version of Indonesian 'Fort Sherman' is also difficult to find on the market. Offspring or even hybrids are often offered here under this name.
