soil mix for Anthuriums
Anthuriums thrive in a well-drained soil mix that ensures good aeration and moisture retention. The mix should be light, airy and well-draining to avoid waterlogging.
This is the mix we recommend for Anthuriums (Cataphyll size):
Ingredients for adult plants (Cataphyll size):
Orchid bark: orchid bark improves drainage and aeration of the soil mix. I use medium sized pieces of orchid bark between 18-25 mm.
Perlite: Perlite improves drainage and prevents the soil from becoming compacted.
Sphagnum moss: Sphagnum moss retains moisture and allows excess water to drain away. It also contributes to the slightly acidic pH value that Anthuriums prefer.
Coconut fibers: Coconut coir can be used instead of or in combination with sphagnum moss. It is an environmentally friendly alternative that retains moisture well.
Worm humus: Worm humus is rich in nutrients and beneficial microorganisms that promote soil health and plant growth.
Pumice (small and medium): Pumice is a lightweight volcanic rock that improves soil drainage and prevents compaction. I use small pumice with a size of about 4 mm and with about 10 mm.
Activated carbon: Activated carbon helps to remove toxins and odors from the soil while promoting a healthy root environment.
LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate): LECA pellets are the main ingredient in this mix and provide a well-aerated and moisture-retentive substrate.
Optional:
Soil: A high quality, balanced soil can add stability and some nutrients to the mix.
