Canal Papillilaminums are those specimens that come from the population on the western bank of the Panama Canal in the province of Colón.
It is characterized by a generally elongated leaf shape, distinct veins, a dark velvety leaf surface and a rather open sinus. The back and the veins are often strikingly purple-reddish. At least the specimens in this population are known for these characteristics. It should be noted that in each population or form both elongated and rounded specimens with open and narrow sinuses coexist.
The best-known clone, which also represents this population in a geographical sense, is Anthurium papillilaminum 'Fort Sherman', named after the American military installation at the northern end of the Panama Canal.
Other suspected canal Papillilaminums include the Anthurium Ree Gardens clone, the Anthurium 'Ralph Lynam' clone and Anthurium papillilaminum 'Daniel' . Some US growers claim that the Anthurium Ree Garden clone is even the same plant as Jay Vannini's Anthurium 'Fort Sherman'. However, more details are unknown.
