The Anthurium sp. Nov DF (species nova (=spec. nova, new species)) - a previously undescribed species - is repeatedly referred to as "the holy grail" of the anthurium world. Originally probably from northern Ecuador and taken from the forests there in the 1990s by Dewey Fisk , who died in 2019 - after whom it was named with the abbreviation 'DF' - the Anthurium sp. Nov. 'DF' was in Jay Vannini's private collection around 20 years ago.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of accounting and documentation, we have few details from Dewey Fisk regarding the Anthurium sp. Nov. 'DF' has been handed down. Location still unknown. To date, the plant has probably never been found or taken from the wild. The individual originally taken from Dewey Fisk was unfortunately lost after a storm destroyed his greenhouse and collection. To this day, this plant is cultivated and hybridized by only a few collectors.
The wide, open sinus, the dark, slightly highlighted veins and almost triangular shape of the leaves in addition to the generally very velvety and almost black appearance are characteristics that make this plant so desirable.
Well-known hybrids of Anthurium sp. Nov. 'DF' include:
- Anthurium 'Demon Mama' (Anthurium sp. nov. 'DF' x Anthurium warocqueanum 'Jolly Green Giant') by Jay Vannini
- Anthurium sp. Nov. 'DF' x Anthurium antolakii 'Felix' by Justin Jones
- Anthurium sp. nov 'DF' x Anthurium carlablackiae
Jay Vannini is already working on two more Anthurium sp. Nov. 'DF' hybrids, which have not yet been found outside of his collection.
