"Bench hybrid" is a term often used in connection with anthurium cultivation, particularly in greenhouses or nurseries, but also in private collections.
In context, this term means that the anthurium flower was left unprotected in the receptive female phase and was not covered by, for example, a net. This results in a so-called "open pollination" through pollen from the anthuriums that are still blooming in the area at the same time. Pollination then usually takes place by pollinators (insects). The pollen donor is therefore not recorded and there may well be several.
Well-known hybrids of these circumstances include the plants commonly referred to as 'Portillae' and their variations. You can find more information about this in our article about the A. sp. Nov. DF.
