Self (x self)

'Selfing' a plant means pollinating it with your own pollen from a previous flower and allowing it to ripen. The resulting seeds and later plants are generally referred to as "selfs", "Seflings" or "x self". In the case of anthuriums, which form hermaphrodite and so-called "protogynous" flowers, selfing can only be done with the second flower.

Explanation: Protogynous means that male and female flower parts sit on the same inflorescence and successively go through the female, receptive and male, pollen-producing phases. This prevents self-pollination in nature.

Designations such as "F1s" or "S1" are now also legitimately used in plant breeding to identify plants that have arisen from self-pollination.
