The Anthurium 'Basilisk' originally comes from an anthurium collector from Indonesia. Erik von Kartel Daun bought a clone from him and obliged the original owner not to sell any more clones of the mother plant. However, the collector still has the option of producing and selling so-called selfs of Anthurium 'Basilisk'.
As far as is known, Anthurium 'Basilisk' is a mutation of the hybrid A. crystallinum x papillilamnum. Under the right conditions, it can have ruffled leaf edges. The anthurium breeder experimented with offspring and, for example, placed heating mats under the seedlings to study the influence of heat on the leaf development of the Anthurium 'Basilisk'. Some of the seedlings then showed the well-known characteristics of the "ruffled edges", others did not.
