Anthurium rotolanteum, also known as Anthurium rotolantei, is a plant whose origin is not exactly known, which is currently placed in the section cardiolonchium. It is believed to be a species. An official description exists, but has not yet been published due to the unclear origin.
The holotype (originally collected plant) was given by Mark Eisenberg to Dennis Rotolante , who has been successfully cultivating it in his Silver Krome Gardens since the 1990s and whose surname the scientific name is derived from. The botanical holotype was described by Tom Croat in 2012. As mentioned above, the official publication is still pending. It is believed that it is a Colombian species from the western Andes. However, there is also debate as to whether the origin could be in Ecuador. It is also believed that it was originally collected by Dr. Julius Alexander. A record from the Fairchild Tropical Gardens indicates that the potential collection location could also be Ecuador. The species was also found early on in the collections of Enid Offolter and Jay Vannini.
It grows subterrestrially with short internodes and is characterized by arrow-shaped (sagittate) leaves in light green with silver speckles. The underside of the leaf is slightly lighter and can have dark spots that can be rubbed off. The leaf surface is slightly shiny with a slightly bullous leaf structure. Leaves grow up to 31cm long and 22cm wide. The inflorescence is characterized by a yellowish-green spadix and a dark brown sheath with a pink base.
It is known from horticulture that Anthurium rotolanteum produces seeds only very reluctantly and inefficiently. Successful self-pollination has not yet been achieved. Hybrids with Anthurium rotolanteum are Anthurium rotolanteum x papillilaminum and Anthurium rotolanteum x (Crystalinum x magnificum) (both grown in the Silver Krome Garden).
Currently, it is a popular and not very widespread collector's plant in horticulture and is traded at a high price.
