Growers Choice

Growers Choice

"Growers Choice" means that the breeder selects the plant the customer receives. The selection is made from a larger group of available seedlings. Typically, these plants fall within the phenotypically expected appearance determined by the parent or sibling plants.

This does not mean that it is an inferior Anthurium. Furthermore, with young Anthuriums, it is not yet possible to predict how individual seedlings will develop as they mature. Thus, it is always possible that an initially unremarkable seedling may later develop into an interesting Anthurium.

Growers Choice and selection

As they develop, individual Anthuriums within a group often become identifiable, showing certain traits particularly clearly or appearing especially interesting from the breeder's perspective. These Anthuriums can be specifically selected and offered, for example, as "Selected."

Other Anthuriums from the group of offspring may initially remain with the breeder. Such Anthuriums are often referred to in the Anthurium scene as "holdbacks."

The terms thus describe different decisions in handling a group of seedlings, but they are not strictly defined botanical categories.

Growers Choice, Selected, and Holdback

These three terms are frequently used in the Anthurium scene in the context of seedling selection:

"Growers Choice" describes an Anthurium from the general group of offspring.

"Selected" describes an Anthurium that has been specifically chosen from within this group based on certain characteristics.

"Holdback" describes an Anthurium that is initially retained by the breeder, for example for their own collection, further observation, or future breeding.

However, these terms do not represent an officially defined hierarchy or quality grading system. A "Selected" plant can be sold. A "Holdback" can also be sold at a later date.
