Growers Choice

Selected

"Selected" usually refers to an Anthurium plant that has been specifically chosen from a larger group based on certain characteristics to be offered for sale.

Crossbreeding often produces many different seedlings. Although they come from the same cross, they do not necessarily develop in the same way.

If a seedling from this group shows specific traits or particularly meets the breeder's aesthetic standards, they may select it from the group. Such a plant is usually labeled as "selected" when it is offered for purchase.

Which features are decisive for a selection depends on the individual breeder and the breeding goal. "Selected" does not mean that it is being held back for breeding purposes. That would be a "holdback." There is an important distinction between these two terms.

In this sense, a plant can be selected without the breeder wishing to keep it permanently for themselves.

Another possibility is that it was set aside for further observation due to its traits but later released for sale because other plants express the sought-after characteristics better or because there are enough plants with those traits available.

The term "selected" therefore primarily describes the act of selection from within a group.

This term is also not a botanically defined category. Its usage may therefore vary from breeder to breeder.

Growers Choice, Selected, and Holdback

These three terms are frequently used in the Anthurium scene in the context of seedling selection:

"Growers Choice" describes an Anthurium from the general group of offspring.

"Selected" describes an Anthurium that has been specifically chosen from within that group based on certain characteristics.

"Holdback" describes an Anthurium that is initially retained by the breeder, for example, for their own collection, further observation, or future breeding.

However, these terms do not represent an officially established hierarchy or quality grading. A "selected" plant can be sold. A "holdback" can also be sold at a later time.
