"Circus Peanuts" is a hybrid of A. dressleri and A. leucostachyum (versicolor). It was bred by Mike Bush in the early 1980s. Selby Botanical Gardens named it "Mike's Goliath" in his honor.
The flower of the ‘Circus Peanuts’ has a very distinct odor that resembles the candy Circus Peanuts - a very old US candy.
Tom Croat coined the unofficial name "Circus Peanuts" precisely because of this sweet smell that the flower gives off: "It smells like the cheap, artificial banana flavoring from the orange gummy bears that were sold in candy stores in the US back then."
According to Donna Atwood from Selby Gardens, the name was originally a joke, but it became very popular and was picked up. Today, the Anthurium is generally referred to as "Circus Peanuts" and not "Mike's Goliath".
