Crystallinum ex Antioquia - Bred from two pure forms of crystallinum selected by Jay Vannini
Anthurium crystallinum 'ex Antioquia' is a form or local variant of the well-known A. crystallinum and is considered a pure form of A. crystallinum. The name 'ex Antioquia' indicates that this plant originally comes from the Colombian region of Antioquia - a province in the Colombian Andes known for its high biodiversity.
As with other Crystallinum varieties, the leaves are velvety, dark green to deep green with contrasting silver-white veins. The leaf shape is often somewhat more pointed and longer than in the well-known A. crystallinum.
Jay Vannini, a renowned collector and botanist from Guatemala, known for his meticulous work with tropical plants, was one of the first people to collect, document and introduce A. crystallinum from Antioquia to collectors - as an F1 generation.
The reason Vannini bred A. crystallinum ex Antioquia F1 was to offer an option for those who wish to add a true A. crystallinum to their collection. These plants were created by crossing two Colombian forms of pure A. crystallinum. The two parent plants correspond to the actual illustrations of the original A. crystallinum imports from the 19th century (cf. Linden and André).
